Every three years, District 10 begins a new chapter. As one panel of trusted servants completes its journey, another begins. District service is more than filling a position. It is an opportunity to deepen your recovery, build friendships, discover new strengths, and help carry the Al-Anon message throughout our communities.

What I Would Say to Someone Considering This Position

I certainly was not qualified when I began. I once heard, “God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called.” That has been my experience completely. Trust yourself, and remember that we never have to do anything alone in Al-Anon.

Typical Time Commitment

One monthly AIS District 6–10 Intergroup meeting (about 1½ hours on Zoom), one monthly District 10 business meeting (about 2½ hours including setup), plus the Spring and Fall Assemblies and four NCWSC meetings each year.

I feel I am doing something fundamentally important to the mission of the District: using the financial contributions entrusted to us by the groups to carry the Al-Anon message to our members and communities.

What Surprised Me Most

I discovered that significant positive changes to the way we manage our finances were possible and that the District team was open to improvement.

What I Would Say to Someone Considering This Position

We use standard accounting software. I am willing to be a service sponsor and make sure the next Treasurer gets the help needed. The accounting knowledge gained can also be useful in other areas of life.

What I Would Say to Someone Considering This Position

Try it anyway. There is no requirement to be “qualified” beyond being an active District 10 Al-Anon member. We are all equals, and you and the team can shape the event together.

Typical Time Commitment

Approximately 2–4 hours per month from January through September, with more time as the September event approaches. October and November are generally a break.

This was not a difficult position and did not take much time each month. Binders are ready with formats, schedules, and planning guidance for the day.

We do not join a gym because we are already qualified to use every machine. We go because we want to become stronger. Service works the same way: we learn, grow, and become more capable by doing it.

Typical Time Commitment

I enjoy the AMIAS members—they are wonderful people, and I learn from them. I also enjoy watching teens change from mostly silent newcomers into savvy Alateens.

What Surprised Me Most

I was surprised by how readily the AMIAS volunteer. I ask, and they help. Much of my work is email communication and opening the door for the monthly meeting.

What I Would Say to Someone Considering This Position

This is not a punishment; have fun with it! Do it your way, relax, and ask others to assist with anything that makes you uneasy. This is a team activity. Year one I knew nothing but became comfortable; by year three it felt easy.

Typical Time Commitment

The first quarter is busiest. Approximately 3 hours per month on average, including preparation for and attendance at two business meetings.

• Do I have to know everything about the position? No. Current trusted servants repeatedly said they learned as they went. Guidelines, binders, meeting recordings, prior trusted servants, committees, and service sponsorship can provide support.
• Do I need previous District experience? Most coordinator positions do not require previous District service. The District Representative and Alternate District Representative must have previously served as a Group Representative, according to District 10’s adopted guidelines.
• What if I do not feel qualified? Feeling unqualified is common. The responses in this project show that willingness, curiosity, dependability, and openness to help often matter more at the beginning than experience.
• Will someone help me learn the position? Yes. Members repeatedly described service as a team activity. Current and past trusted servants can share experience, explain routines, provide records and binders, and help the next person get comfortable.
• Can I ask questions without committing? Absolutely. There is no commitment—just a conversation. Contact the current trusted servant for the position you are curious about.
• How much time does District service take? It varies. Some roles take only a few hours per month; officer positions and technology or financial roles may take more. The trusted-servant profiles give honest estimates, and the official guidelines explain required meetings and events.
• What if a position involves something I am not good at? Service can be a safe place to grow. Several trusted servants described gaining confidence by doing things they initially feared or did not yet know how to do.
• Can a member who also belongs to AA serve? District 10’s adopted guideline marks certain coordinator positions with a “+,” indicating that Al-Anon members who are also AA members may serve in those positions. Officer eligibility and voting/service restrictions should be confirmed from current Al-Anon and District guidelines.
• Are all positions three-year commitments? District 10 guidelines state that all positions are three-year terms concurrent with the NCWSA panel.
• What happens if I make a mistake? You ask for help, correct what can be corrected, and keep learning. District service is not a test of perfection; it is recovery practiced with other people.
