What Are AMIAS and Why Do We Need Them?
Alateen meetings require two AMIAS to be present. They do not run the meeting, that is left to the Alateens to do. The AMIAS provide an Alanon perspective on the recovery program, and make sure the meeting is a safe place for Alateens to share and participate. An AMIAS can also serve by being an event sponsor where they are responsible for Alateen safety at the event.
Why Become an AMIAS?
Being an AMIAS provides a perspective not found in Al-Anon meetings. Alateen issues are often different. though similar to those of Al-Anon members. The teenagers bring a way of looking at recovery that adults do not usually have. “AMIASes” frequently report that their own recovery program is strengthened by the insights and questions of Alateens. It is also rewarding to see changes in the teens over the course of their time in the Alateen program.
How Do You Become an AMIAS?
There are certain requirements for anyone interested in becoming an AMIAS.
- They must have at least 2 years in Al-Anon and attend an Al-Anon meeting regularly.
- They must be at least 21 years of age.
